Stuttgart, Germany — Defense Secretary Pete Hegses on Tuesday visited American bases in Germany to restore more military base names after bringing back “Fort Bragg” earlier this week.
“There's a reason why I said Bragg and Benning when I stepped into the Pentagon on the first day. But it's not just Bragg and Benning. There are many other service members connected, so I'll be restoring it. He said at a press conference.
On Monday, Hegses signed a memorandum of understanding that reversed the Biden administration's decision. The Biden Pentagon renamed the prestigious North Carolina Base in 2023, after being named after Confederate General Braxton Bragg.
Asked for his name, Heggs said the decision meant “Bragg is back.”
“It means the legacy of an institution mobilized and served IS by generations of Americans. It's a shame what happened to the veterinarians, service members and their families that emerged from it. Bragg. It's a fort. And I was honored to put my signature on it,” he said.
He added that the decision was given with the support of President Donald Trump.
Hegseth has renamed Bragg, but is now named after Nazis and Ronald L. Bragg, a private first class Army who fought in World War II.
“We are honored to support our private first class who received Purple Heart and Silver Star in the Battle of the Bulge,” he said.
“We are celebrating private first class and are proud to have Marines as the Vice President of the United States,” he said, referring to Vice President J.D. Vance. “Junior enlisting has never seen a better day,” joked Hegses, who retired as an Army major.
“But it's about that legacy. It's about the connections with communities with people we don't serve, as the president said, as we said. “Others that erode the same legacy.” The base has been changed.
