As the Detroit Tigers’ season approaches its conclusion, it seems increasingly probable that Tarik Skubal will be available for trade this summer.
On a recent episode of “Pardon the Interruption,” ESPN baseball insider Buster Olney suggested that the Dodgers might be one of the three teams interested in acquiring the Tigers’ left-handed pitcher. He noted, “If he’s traded, keep your eye on some familiar teams. I think clubs like the Dodgers, Phillies, and the San Diego Padres will be in the mix because Skubal could significantly enhance their pitching rotation.”
Skubal, who has been impressive on the mound, has won Cy Young Awards for the past two years with an ERA below 2.40 while striking out over 200 batters in that timeframe. This year, he’s maintained a solid performance with a 3-2 record and a 2.70 ERA, coupled with 45 strikeouts. However, his season took an unexpected turn on May 4 when he was placed on the disabled list due to issues with a loose left elbow.
Unfortunately, the Tigers are struggling this season, currently holding the worst record in baseball at 22-35, and Skubal’s absence from the starting rotation hasn’t helped. With the pitcher approaching free agency this offseason, a trade looks likely.
Olney remarked, “Tarik Skubal is going to bring back significant value, especially since he becomes a free agent this fall.” If the Dodgers secure Skubal, they’ll bolster their already impressive pitching lineup that includes star players like Shohei Ohtani, World Series standout Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell, and Tyler Glasnow.
