Tarik Skubal’s Emotional Return to Comerica Park
DETROIT –– When Tarik Skubal walked into Comerica Park for the first time since his trade to the Dodgers, he couldn’t help but smile.
It was three hours before the game on Friday, and Skubal stepped out of a visiting clubhouse, taking in the ballpark he once called home. Just a month ago, he had been a part of the Tigers, and now here he was, standing in a familiar yet strange setting.
He started by observing from the dugout before making his way up to the infield. There, he spotted some former teammates warming up in the outfield, including Jackson Jobe. Their eyes met, and Skubal’s face lit up as he greeted him with a playful gesture.
For a fleeting moment, everything felt normal again.
However, that sense of normalcy didn’t last long for the two-time Cy Young Award winner as the night unfolded.
“This is probably going to be the toughest one, I think, as far as emotions,” remarked manager Dave Roberts before the game. “He spent eight years here with these guys. Some of his best friends are with this team still.”
As the Dodgers played against the Tigers, Skubal navigated a rollercoaster of emotions during his six-inning start, which included one run allowed and seven strikeouts.
Before his appearance, he visibly choked up while watching a tribute video on the scoreboard as he walked out of the bullpen. The reception from the crowd was warm; fans stood to applaud him as he entered the dugout and again when he took the mound.
His performance was solid, highlighted by a stretch where he retired 12 batters in a row after a leadoff double. He showcased his signature changeups and a blazing 99 mph fastball, striking out three batters in the third inning.
However, the fifth inning saw him concede an RBI triple to Max Clark, and he was pulled after only 83 pitches. It felt like a lot more, considering the emotional weight of the occasion.
“There’s going to be emotions, but I do think he’s going to stay within himself,” Roberts had said before the game. “It’s a familiar mound, familiar background, all that stuff. So I think he’s going to be back to himself.”
In terms of the game’s outcome, Skubal’s efforts were critical for the Dodgers, especially after a recent sweep by the Braves. He kept the team in contention even when their offense struggled early on, failing to capitalize on the nine baserunners they had in the first five innings.
The Dodgers eventually took the lead, thanks to a pinch-hit RBI from Miguel Rojas in the sixth and another from Freddie Freeman in the eighth, along with three scoreless innings from the bullpen, allowing them to secure a much-needed victory.
But for Skubal, this day meant more than just statistics. It was a poignant reminder of his journey and the emotions that lingered from leaving Detroit, where he had gained such affection from the fans.
