Dog, backpack found after owner disappears into California wilderness: police

A search is underway for a 71-year-old man who set off on a journey into the California wilderness but never returned.

According to the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office, Michael Moore obtained a wilderness permit stating he intended to hike toward Lake Powell in the Emigrant Wilderness in Sonora, California.

Authorities said Moore’s dog and backpack were found on the trail in the opposite direction from his intended route on Saturday and Sunday.

Police said a silver Toyota Corolla owned by Moore was also found parked at the trailhead.

Police said Moore was 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighed about 128 pounds and had shoulder-length white hair and a white beard.

When last seen, he was wearing cut-off denim shorts, a black baseball cap, and a shirt of an unknown color.

The sheriff’s office said search and rescue workers are searching the area for Moore and urged anyone who sees him or knows his whereabouts to contact them at 209-533-5815.
