The Hero Dog Awards has announced the finalists for this award as a way to highlight the work of these remarkable animals in a variety of fields.
Headquartered in Washington, D.C., the organization was founded in 1877 and is the nation's first humane organization dedicated to animals.

The annual national competition determines America's top dogs in five major categories: Law enforcement and first responder dogs. Service dogs and guide dogs or hearing dogs. therapy dog. And new heroes and rescue dogs.
Starting in April, hundreds of dog owners across the country submitted their pets' names for consideration as a “hero dog.”
This year's winner of the Hero Dog Award is Beau, a law enforcement and first responder dog.
He is an 18-month-old male bloodhound from Gastonia, North Carolina, who works for the Gastonia Police Department.

Although Beau is young, he has been saving lives and solving crimes since he was 8 months old, according to American Humane.

Roland told Fox News Digital that presenting Beau with the Hero Dog Award “means everything” to him and the Gastonia Police Department.
“Every time he returns a missing loved one to the arms of their families, all the hard work we've put in together pays off,” he said.
He added: “This national recognition for Beau is sure to bring comfort to the communities we serve and demonstrate that his skills can be used to reunite families and bring justice to victims. ” he added.
