Children’s YouTube Star Engages in Political Controversy
Popular children’s YouTube personality, known as “Rachel,” has ignited a political debate by criticizing President Donald Trump for sharing a widely circulated video featuring young children wearing hijabs at a kindergarten graduation in Minnesota.
Rachel, whose full name is Rachel Griffin Accurso, expressed her support for the children in a post on Instagram. She commented on the significance of the hijab for those families, noting, “I’m glad you’re wearing something meaningful and special to you.” She highlighted that children often wear items representing their culture and faith, such as hijabs, kippahs, and crosses, while others might choose not to wear religious symbols at all.
In her post, she seemed to indirectly reference the president’s comments without naming him, stating, “No one’s hurtful words can take away our value! Just because someone says something doesn’t mean it’s true!”
Restaurant Owner’s Unique Fine
Accurso, who gained fame for creating educational content for kids, boasts a significant social media following—with over 20.5 million YouTube subscribers, around 9.3 million TikTok followers, and more than 5 million on Instagram.
Her remarks came after Trump reshared the graduation video, initially posted by the End Wokeness account, which claimed it showed a school in St. Paul, Minnesota, alongside the caption: “All the girls wear hijabs in kindergarten.”
The president’s repost did not include his own commentary, and the video featured multiple young children adorned in blue graduation attire, along with hijabs, which are traditional head coverings for Muslim women.
Activism and Public Response
Accurso took the opportunity to share her experiences attending various celebrations over the past year, including Hanukkah, Eid, and both Easter and Christmas family gatherings.
She urged children to speak with trusted adults if they encounter negativity due to their clothing choices, emphasizing that, “there is more kindness than fear, that love is stronger than hate, and that so many people have your back.”
This isn’t Accurso’s first foray into political issues. Earlier this year, she visited an immigrant detention center in Newark, New Jersey, where she described the children as “traumatized.” Additionally, she has faced criticism for her advocacy regarding children in Gaza.
Past Controversies
Accurso has also faced scrutiny in the past, notably for liking an anti-Semitic comment on an Instagram post earlier this year. In response to the backlash, she clarified that she had mistakenly liked the comment while attempting to delete it, reiterating her commitment against hate: “Anti-Semitism or hatred of any kind has no place in my life or work,” she stated.
In her message, she reinforced her dedication to kindness and inclusion, aspects she claims guide her daily actions.
