Police K-9 Aids in Major Drug Bust in Los Angeles Suburb

A police K-9 played a crucial role in a drug bust, helping to uncover approximately 440 pounds of cocaine hidden in cardboard boxes inside an SUV in a suburb of Los Angeles.

The operation took place in Alhambra, roughly ten miles east of downtown L.A., where law enforcement announced the incident on Saturday. The traffic stop occurred along Valley Boulevard near the 710 Freeway.

While the reason for the traffic stop wasn’t specified, officers grew suspicious of the vehicle, which was loaded with an unusually large amount of cargo.

In fact, the department humorously remarked that “the driver was transporting more cardboard boxes than Amazon on Prime Day” on their social media.

As officers probed further, they asked the driver about the boxes. Initially, he claimed he was returning to Huntington Park from his cousin’s home and that the boxes weren’t really his.

But then, his story evolved. “Later came version 2.0 of his lore,” as police called it, where he shifted to saying he was delivering diesel parts to a friend’s shop.

At that point, a K-9 named Otis, along with his handler, arrived on the scene.

The German shepherd indicated a presence of drugs, which gave officers sufficient grounds to search the SUV without needing a warrant. Thanks to Otis’ keen sense of smell, officers discovered around 200 kilos of cocaine.

The driver was identified as Julio Rangel from Huntington Park and was subsequently arrested and taken to the Alhambra Police Department jail, although the exact date of the arrest has not been disclosed.

Following the bust, Otis received recognition for his efforts. The police department enthusiastically remarked, “A round of a-paws for our good boy,” highlighting their appreciation in a playful tone.

As expected, the story of Otis and the drug haul quickly gained traction and went viral. One social media user shared photos of the K-9 along with his impressive find, introducing him as “Meet Otis. He’s a police K9 in Alhambra, California, and he just had a banger of a day.”
