As per a recent update from the official Doge site, the government’s Department of Efficiency (DOGE) has managed to save a noteworthy $160 billion.
So, Doge has found some taxpayer savings. These savings come from a mix of “asset sales, contract cancellations and renegotiations, fraud recovery, grant cancellations, interest savings, program adjustments, regulatory savings, and workforce cuts.” When you break it down, it totals approximately $993.79 in savings for each taxpayer.
Just last week, Doge shared news about savings stemming from a round of contract cancellations, cutting 179 agreements over just two days. The overall cap for these contracts was $1.87 billion, which translated to a savings of about $280 million. Some notable cancellations included a $1.8 million US Trade Development Agreement for “Energy and Climate Advisory Services,” a 207K HHS Consulting Agreement for a “Grant Writing Workshop,” and an 89K Ministry of Treasury contract concerning the “Namibia Country Program Manager.”
On Thursday, Doge also revealed the cancellation of its 401 contract, which had a cap of $2.1 billion and resulted in savings of $613 million. Among the contracts that were terminated was one for $276,000 that fed into the Doge initiative, specifically focusing on a “Kenya Program Coordinator.”
Other contracts that ended included a $228K agreement for cruiser vehicles in Kenya, Uganda, Namibia, and Tanzania, a $24,000 DHS contract for a “2-day training on equal employment opportunities”, and a few more concerning workplace advocacy. There was also a significant $5.9 million DHS contract.
Doge praised the USDA for shutting down 420 grants this week, leading to savings of $2.3 billion. One of these grants was a $150,000 song aimed at creating a “gender lens curriculum” that spans various fields like food and agriculture. Another grant, worth $100,000, was designated for “Ghana’s climate resilience and sustainable agriculture,” while one focused on “New York’s genderless non-binary, two-spirit ‘Bipok farmers'” received $361,000.
At this moment, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) leads in savings per Doge, followed by the General Services Agency (GSA) and the U.S. Department of Education. In contrast, the Department of Justice (DOJ), the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and the Department of Energy (DOE) are tracking lower in savings.
