Doing Border, Energy, Taxes in One Bill Would Get Buy-In, Help Get SALT Relief

On Tuesday's broadcast of Fox News Channel's “Your World,” U.S. Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-N.Y.) said everyone would want a piece of this bill: the border bill, the tax bill, the energy bill. He argued that it would be best to combine the two into one settlement bill. He said implementing the plan as one bill is the best way to ensure some relief under the state and local tax (SALT) credit.

Mr Malliotakis said: [relevant remarks begin around 2:40] “I think we need to try to resolve everything in one settlement. There are some border states that obviously care about their borders. I think the majority of Americans do, but that's not true for states across the country. There are some energy producing countries where we want to expand domestic production, which would lead to lower prices not just for energy, but for food and goods across the country. States that offer some form of SALT deduction to voters and I'm interested in the tax deduction, and I would like to say to the members of the Ways and Means Committee, of which I am a member, that this is what the tax reduction is. [have] Participate in those negotiations. why? If you leave it until the end of the year, you may end up falling off. It has to be integrated with everything else that currently exists. ”

She added that it makes sense to do everything in one bill. “Everyone wants something, whether it's border security, energy production or tax cuts. If you put it together, you can satisfy a lot of members and build consensus. The Senate has 53 Republican votes, but 7 to pass anything unless we reconcile. We also have to remember that we need votes, so it may be difficult to get seven Democratic senators on our side to extend the Trump tax cuts. We will benefit millions of Americans and create millions of jobs. President Trump also wants to lower taxes for seniors. But we want to increase that standard deduction and provide a salt deduction. So I think the only way to do that is to get it in the first package. If we leave it until the end of the year, there's a real risk that everything will expire, and that's bad for our economy and for us. It will have a negative impact on the American families it represents.”
