The Justice Department has initiated an investigation into Corey Lewandowski, a long-standing advisor to Trump, according to a source familiar with the situation.
This investigation follows a criminal referral sent to the DOJ by the inspector general of the Department of Homeland Security. It represents a notable legal development for Lewandowski, who has been a significant figure in Trump’s political circle.
When reporters approached Trump outside the White House regarding this inquiry, he mentioned wanting accountability for his staff. He acknowledged having “heard something about it,” but didn’t go into specifics.
“All I know is I want my people to be honest,” Trump stated. He expressed a strong sentiment, warning, “If they’re not going to be honest, they have to be prosecuted.” He elaborated that dishonesty feels like “stealing from me as president,” and reiterated his desire for honesty among his team.
Trump added, “So, I want my people to be honest. And if they’re not honest, I’ll have my DOJ go and do whatever they have to do.”
Adam Trigg, Lewandowski’s attorney, responded by saying that his client has not yet been contacted by the Justice Department and he denies any wrongdoing. In a statement shared on Lewandowski’s social media, Trigg noted, “Mr. Lewandowski has not been contacted by the Justice Department regarding any investigation, and he denies any wrongdoing when he was proudly serving his country in a voluntary capacity.”
Lewandowski has been a loyal ally to Trump, having served previously as an advisor to the former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and as Trump’s first campaign manager during the 2016 election before his dismissal that June.
He remained close to Trump and continued to serve as a senior advisor during the 2020 and 2024 campaigns. After reports from The Wall Street Journal suggested that the DOJ is reviewing allegations regarding his conduct, Lewandowski referred to the media coverage as “another example of the kind of anonymous-source, politically driven reporting that Americans have seen time and again.” He defended his contributions, stating that he takes pride in his voluntary work in furthering the administration’s agenda and believes that the facts will ultimately clarify the situation, rather than anonymous claims.
