DOJ Blasts Apple For Fueling ‘Social Stigma’ With Green Bubble Texts For Androids

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has slammed Apple in an antitrust lawsuit over its “green bubble” text messages, alleging that they create “social stigma, exclusion, and stigmatization” for Android users.

“Many non-iPhone users also experience social stigma, exclusion, and stigmatization for ‘breaking’ chats where other participants have iPhones.” lawsuit claim. The Justice Department claims this affects certain demographics, including teenagers.

Sixteen state attorneys general and the Department of Justice filed the lawsuit in New Jersey federal court.

“This social pressure strengthens switching costs and encourages users to continue purchasing iPhones. Apple’s smartphone advantage is solidified not because Apple improves its smartphones. , because communication with other smartphones deteriorated,” the Justice Department said.

Complaints go beyond text message color differences. According to the Department of Justice, there are notable differences between iPhone and Android that include “limited built-in functionality.” The complaint alleges that Android users experience poor video quality, no input indicators when sending text messages on an iPhone, and messages are not encrypted.

According to the complaint, issues are occurring among iPhone and Android users in both individual and group chats. One issue is how responses to text messages, such as likes, are displayed as text rather than as icons. Other issues include the inability to send large files and the inability to edit text messages, the complaint says.

“This signals to users that rival smartphones are of lower quality, with a poorer experience for sending messages to friends and family who don’t own an iPhone. even if it is on Apple rather than a rival’s smartphone,” the complaint states. The Justice Department asked Apple’s CEO if the company would fix text messages between two devices during Vox Media’s 2022 Code conference, which prevented participants from “sending certain videos to their mother.” He mentioned an exchange in which he asked Tim Cook. Mr. Cook replied, “Please buy your mother an iPhone.”
