DOJ Expands Its ‘Active Criminal Investigation’ of Alaska’s 2nd Dan Sullivan

Investigation Into Alaska Senate Ballot Candidate

Federal prosecutors are looking into how Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. ended up on the U.S. Senate ballot in Alaska alongside Republican incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan. There are expectations of grand jury subpoenas as the investigation focuses on potential violations of voters’ rights.

According to Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin, this criminal investigation has been ongoing for several months. The intensity of the probe has increased following a New York Times report that detailed efforts by Democratic operatives to attract a candidate with the same name as the sitting senator.

The inquiry is being handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Alaska, as noted in Spunt’s reporting. Investigators are gearing up to seek to preserve communications from phone companies, with subpoenas anticipated to be issued soon.

Prosecutors are trying to unravel the timeline that brought Sullivan into the race while probing possible misconduct related to the rights of Alaska voters. It appears that the investigation will extend beyond Election Day.

This inquiry predates recent revelations. Earlier, ABC News reported that federal authorities were looking into potential wire fraud or conspiracy related to the election’s fairness, but it remained unclear who might be charged.

The candidate under examination is a retired teacher from Petersburg, a community located in Southeast Alaska, and he is not the same individual as the incumbent senator seeking reelection.

The latest developments follow a report from the New York Times, which outlined a coordinated effort involving individuals linked to Democratic Senate nominee Mary Peltola’s campaign along with the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee to recruit other candidates.

The Times based its findings on interviews with a dozen sources, along with text messages and various documents. Reportedly, the effort included trying to find Alaskans who had the same name as the current senator.

Elisa Rios, who was Peltola’s campaign manager, expressed that voters should be made aware of this recruitment effort. Following the report, Peltola’s campaign reiterated its lack of involvement.

“The Alaskans for Mary campaign has no involvement with either Sullivan campaign,” the campaign stated, emphasizing its focus on issues like reducing costs and addressing problems in Washington, D.C.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has denied participating in this recruitment effort, asserting that Sullivan’s candidacy was separate from Peltola’s campaign.

The controversy over his candidacy began well before the general election. Initially, Alaska election officials sought to keep Sullivan off the ballot, claiming that his filing was deceptive. However, he legally challenged this decision, and the Alaska Supreme Court ultimately upheld his right to run.

Former President Trump has also weighed in, calling for both Peltola and the other Sullivan to be removed from the ballot and prosecuted. He accused Democrats of orchestrating a scheme to mislead voters.

“This is Voter Fraud at the Highest Level, and the Democrat Candidate, who was involved in the scheme, Mary Peltola, should be removed from the Ballot and prosecuted — So should the FAKE Dan Sullivan. Nothing else will do! This behavior in our Elections cannot be allowed to continue,” Trump stated.
