The Department of Justice is looking into claims that Corey Lewandowski, a former official in the Trump administration, may have misused his position for personal gain.
The investigation focuses on allegations that Lewandowski benefited financially from his role at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This information comes from sources familiar with the situation, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.
Lewandowski worked as a senior adviser at DHS under Kristi Noem until they both left their roles in March. Their departure came amidst increasing scrutiny regarding issues within the agency and concerns about spending practices.
The inquiry was initiated based on findings from the DHS inspector general, who recently shared information regarding Lewandowski’s time at the department, according to the WSJ.
A spokesperson from the DOJ opted not to comment on the matter following an inquiry from the Daily Caller.
The Daily Caller also reached out to Lewandowski for his perspective. His attorney, Adam Trigg, stated, “Mr. Lewandowski has not been contacted by the Justice Department regarding any investigation, and he denies any wrongdoing when he was proudly serving his country in a voluntary capacity.”
When President Trump was asked about the investigation regarding Lewandowski, he expressed that he expects honesty from his team, remarking, “All I know is, I want my people to be honest, and if they’re not going to be honest, they have to be prosecuted.”
According to another July WSJ report, the DHS inspector general allegedly found indications that Lewandowski might have improperly influenced the awarding of government contracts.
It’s been suggested that this internal watchdog had spent several months considering whether to send the matter to the DOJ for possible criminal charges.
Additionally, during his tenure at DHS, Lewandowski reportedly sought contracts with various Gulf States on behalf of foreign governments.
There have also been rumors about an extramarital relationship between Noem and Lewandowski.
The Daily Caller reached out to DHS for a response but did not receive one in time for publication.
