Dollar rises against yen amid US-China trade hope; Kiwi increases.

Dollar Gains Amid Eased Trade Tensions

The dollar saw an uptick in early Asian trading on Monday, while global tensions appeared to relax slightly. This shift followed discussions over the weekend between the U.S. and China, which alleviated worries about a potential trade war between these two major economies.

The Greenback, alongside American assets, regained some trust after tariffs imposed last month by President Trump caused some turbulence. After talks in Geneva, Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent and trade representative Jamieson Greer indicated that they had come to an agreement with China aimed at reducing the U.S. trade deficit.

More details on this agreement are expected to emerge later today. Meanwhile, attention will also be directed towards this week’s U.S. revenue data, particularly the Consumer Price Index (CPI) figures set to release on Tuesday.

According to PepperStone’s research director, “The early signs from interbank foreign exchange trade are supporting a stronger USD. Certainly, currencies like CHF, JPY, and EUR all seem to be impacted as we approach the CORE CPI and retail sales.” He reiterated that the current momentum appears to favor the dollar.

On another note, India and Pakistan declared a ceasefire over the weekend after a four-day conflict that had unsettled markets. Additionally, Ukrainian President Voldimi Zelensky expressed readiness to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Turkey this Thursday, marking their first in-person discussion since the early days of the 2022 invasion.

The Dollar Index in Asia climbed 0.2%, although it has decreased 3.6% since the tariffs were announced in early April. The U.S. dollar also rose by 0.3% to 145.85 yen, while New Zealand’s Kiwi, often viewed as a risk asset indicator, climbed 0.2% to $0.5921.

The euro is currently trading at $1.1226, representing a 0.20% decrease in Asia. Meanwhile, the Australian dollar has shown a slight increase of 0.19%, reaching $0.6424.
