Garlic Powder Recall at Dollarama Due to Contamination Risk
This week, health officials revealed a recall of garlic powder available at Dollarama stores throughout Canada, citing concerns over potential microbial contamination.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced on Wednesday that Heavenly Spices garlic powder is the product in question. The recall is precautionary as the batch may contain Bacillus cereus, a bacterium known to cause symptoms like nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The CFIA has advised consumers to “not use, sell, offer, or distribute” the affected items.
Classified as a class 2 recall, it indicates a moderate risk of consuming the product, which could lead to short-term or non-life-threatening health issues.
A Dollarama representative mentioned that anyone who purchased the product must dispose of it. They also noted that customers could reach out to Dollarama’s customer service to obtain a $2 electronic gift card as compensation.
The garlic powder was sold in 70-gram containers both in stores and online.
Notably, symptoms related to Bacillus cereus typically persist for about 24 to 48 hours. This bacterium is often found in improperly stored meats, gravies, sauces, and cooked rice.
This garlic powder recall comes on the heels of another significant announcement earlier this week when the FDA disclosed that General Mills is recalling over 735,000 packages of Pillsbury bread products due to possible glass contamination.
Additionally, reports from Bloomberg News indicate that fresh produce supplier Taylor Farms is poised to issue a recall concerning ingredients tied to Cyclospora outbreaks across various states, even though they clarified that none of their private label salad products have been implicated.
