Former President Trump said Sunday that he never asked for rival Hillary Clinton to be sent to prison, despite her calls during the 2016 campaign.
Trump, who was convicted on Thursday of 34 felony counts and faces possible prison time, dismissed accounts of his attacks on Clinton during the campaign trail in an interview on “Fox & Friends.”
“You often said about Hillary Clinton, ‘Put her in jail.’ As president, you didn’t do that,” Fox News’ Will Cain told the former president.
“I beat her,” Trump responded. “When you win, it’s easier. They always said, ‘Put her in jail,’ and I could have done that, but I thought it would be awful. And this is what happened to me.”
“I didn’t say, ‘Put her in jail,’ but the people said, ‘Put her in jail, put her in jail,'” Trump continued. “And we won. And I said, quite frankly, ‘Okay, relax, let’s go, we’ve got to make this country great.'”
But during his campaign, Trump repeatedly called for Clinton to be sent to prison, and after the 2016 election, his supporters were regularly heard chanting “put her in prison” at rallies.
Just before the election, he promised to appoint a special counsel to investigate Clinton, but no special counsel was ever appointed.
It is unclear whether Trump will face any prison time after being convicted of business forgery, which carries a maximum sentence of four years in prison, but also a possible fine, house arrest or probation.
The sentencing is scheduled for July 11. Trump has appealed the conviction.
