President Donald Trump responded Monday morning to an announcement from the Vatican where Pope Francis passed away.
The Catholic spiritual leader was 88.

Pope Francis was promoted to the role in March 2013 following the historic resignation of his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI. Originally from Argentina, he was the first Latin American leader of the Catholic Church.
The Vatican announced Monday morning that Pope Francis had passed away at his residence in Casa Santa Malta, Vatican.
“It is a deep sadness to have to announce the death of our dear brothers and sisters, our holy father, Francis,” Cardinal Kevin Farrell announced on the Vatican television channel as a confirmation. He continued:
This morning at 7:35, the Bishop of Rome of Francis returned to his father’s house. His life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and his church.
He taught us to live the values of the gospel with faithfulness, courage and universal love, especially for the poorest and most marginalized people.
In great gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we praise Pope Francis’ soul to God’s infinite merciful love, one and the Trinity.
The late Pope has been troubled by poor health in recent years.
He briefly met with Vice President J.D. Vance and his family on Sunday evening in his hotel room after delegating the public celebration to another cardinal for his illness.
