Trump’s State of the Union Address Breaks Records

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi criticized President Donald Trump’s State of the Union speech, calling it “lazy.” But, interestingly, Trump set a new benchmark with the longest State of the Union speech in U.S. history. This latest address lasted roughly 1 hour and 48 minutes, surpassing his previous records.

In fact, Trump, who is the oldest person to serve as president, has given three of the five longest State of the Union speeches in history. His 2026 speech not only took top honors but also exceeded the traditional length, as most such addresses generally last around an hour.

“I thought the speech was lazy,” Pelosi stated during a CNN interview after the address.

During his speech, Trump received high praise from former President Bill Clinton, who recognized the significance of the moment. Interestingly, when considering total time, including applause and standing ovations, both Trump and Clinton’s speeches rank among the longest in history.

Top Five Longest State of the Union Addresses

  1. Donald Trump, 2026 – 1 hour 48 minutes
  2. Donald Trump, 2025 – 1 hour 40 minutes
  3. Bill Clinton, 2000 – 1 hour 29 minutes
  4. Bill Clinton, 1995 – 1 hour 25 minutes
  5. Donald Trump, 2019 – 1 hour 22 minutes

Trump also holds an unofficial record for the most words spoken in a State of the Union address, estimated to be around 10,599 words in his latest speech.

Critics like Pelosi voiced their concerns about the content of his speech, where he highlighted American achievements like the gold medal-winning men’s hockey team and acknowledged victims of violence. Notably, he mentioned individuals connected to tragic incidents involving Afghan refugees.

Pelosi responded to this focus, questioning, “What is the current state of this country?” I mean, it raises a point about whether such acknowledgments are truly relevant in the larger discussion.

During the address, Trump urged Congress to “pass the Insider Trading Act without delay,” targeting stock trading practices among lawmakers. This moment drew bipartisan applause, which was quite notable given the current political climate.

Turning to Pelosi, he remarked, “I wonder if Nancy Pelosi has stood up — if she’s even here — I doubt it.” This comment seemed to reflect not just a challenge but also perhaps a bit of theatrics typical of his speeches.

Pelosi and her husband have been facing heightened attention regarding their investments, which adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing debates surrounding Congress and stock trading.
