Heaton also spoke about how becoming a mother has made her a better actor.
For me, [having children] I took time off work for my career, but when I got married and had kids, I realized it improved the way I focused on my career, because I knew that I had a strong relationship at home and that no matter what happens in show business, I have people who are there for me. So it gives you a sense of stability and security. And when you have kids, it opens up a room in your heart that only kids can open up.
And it gives you another source of emotion to dip into for acting, and it makes you more vulnerable because part of your mind is roaming around you outside of your body. And you’re more vulnerable because you’re responsible for them, and that vulnerability is great for acting, you feel more fear and more joy, and it all deepens.
“I’ve become more fierce about what I need, and it’s not just for myself, it’s for my kids,” Heaton added. “I’ve become better at fighting for what I want. When I talk to actors, especially when I talk to Christian actors, I say, ‘Don’t put off life. Don’t put off relationships.'”
After being asked if she’d ever had to play a character whose actions were “strongly contrary to my values,” Heaton responded: “When I was offered the show, I went to the showrunner and said, ‘I’m pro-life, so I’m not going to do anything pro-abortion unless it’s balanced with a pro-life perspective.’
“And she said, ‘We don’t do anything about abortion. There’s nothing funny about abortion,’ and I said, ‘Okay, I just wanted you to know,'” Heaton explained. “Since then, I’ve had long-running shows and God has been so good to me and put me on shows that never venture into abortion territory.”
The actress also Everybody loves Raymond The show featured a Catholic family, with episodes including one in which Deborah has a sister who is becoming a nun, and one in which Ray’s father asks him why he doesn’t go to mass.
“It was a big episode and there was such a big reaction,” Heaton said. middle “We went to church, it was a part of their lives. It wasn’t emphasized or ignored. There were episodes where we went to church.”
