Doug Emhoff urges men to join abortion rights fight: ‘Women are dying’

Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff on Tuesday urged more men to advocate for abortion rights, saying the key issues in the 2024 election are not just about women, but about families and all Americans. said.

“This is an issue of fairness for women. Women are dying,” Emhoff said. He told NBC’s Yamiche Alcindor.. “It’s affecting me. [men’s] The ability to plan your life. And it’s also a question of what happens next and what other freedoms are at risk. And these freedoms affect all Americans, not just women. ”

Emhoff was in Atlanta on Tuesday to speak on a panel with the abortion rights group Men4Choice, and the Biden campaign is targeting abortion as its biggest argument for siding with swing voters this November.

He told NBC that men are key to making this issue stick, and that many don’t realize how central the reproductive rights debate is to them.

“I’ve been talking about this with other dad friends,” Emhoff said. “I’m talking about it with my son. It’s not just because I have a daughter. I have a son and I’m thinking about how this is going to affect him and whether he’s going to start a family. We are talking about what to do.”

He also warned that after the Supreme Court repeals federal abortion protections in 2022, the conservative-majority court could move toward more reproductive health care.

“What’s next?” he asked. “So, is it contraception? Is that…?” [the] Do you have the right to marry who you want to marry and love who you want to love? Read what you want to read? ”

The Biden campaign hopes that abortion rights will also be a boon in battleground states with statewide voting, such as Florida and Arizona. The Sunshine State has become a surprising target for Democrats in 2024 after enacting strict abortion bans this month.
