WASHINGTON – Doug McCain, a Navy pilot and the oldest son of the late U.S. Senator John McCain, has passed away unexpectedly at the age of 66, according to an announcement from his family.
The exact cause of his death isn’t known at this time.
Meghan McCain, his sister, shared her feelings publicly by stating, “I am deeply saddened to share the news of the sudden passing of my brother Doug McCain.”
“He was such a wonderful, fun person and supported me throughout my life,” she continued. “He brought humor, fun, and great conversation to every room. I will cherish the memories we shared together. Our prayers are with his wife Ashley and children Caroline and Shep.”
Doug McCain is survived by his wife, Ashley; his mother, Carol; two children; and a large extended family. He was adopted by Carol Shepp when she married John McCain in 1965.
Doug was born to John McCain’s first wife, Carol. After their divorce, John married Cindy in 1980, who is Meghan’s mother.
The late senator met his first wife while serving in the Navy through a mutual acquaintance, Alasdair Swanson, who was Doug’s biological father. Swanson and Carol’s marriage lasted about six years, ending after allegations of infidelity.
Following their marriage, McCain adopted two sons, Doug and Andrew.
After the divorce in 1980, Doug and his brother initially had a rocky relationship with John, though they eventually reconciled, as reported by The New York Times in 2000.
Doug McCain grew up in Jacksonville, Florida.
His passing was announced last Wednesday, with services scheduled for the upcoming weekend.
“He was a loyal friend to many and cherished every friendship. He was a devoted son, a loving father to Caroline and Shep, and took great joy in being a grandfather to Teddy,” his obituary noted.
“Doug will be remembered for his generous heart, loyal friendship, and unwavering love for his family. He will be dearly missed by those closest to him.”
John McCain, a father of seven, passed away in 2018 after battling an aggressive form of brain cancer.
