Sen. Mark Kelly Faces Backlash for Wearing Mexico Jersey
In a surprising turn, Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) came under fire online after donning a Mexico jersey during a World Cup viewing party in Tucson. The senator shared a photo of himself in the jersey on X, emphasizing local enthusiasm for the match against England.
“A lot of people are coming to Tucson to watch Mexico play England. Tucson and LaRosa know how to do a World Cup!” he tweeted.
However, the social media response was swift and harsh. Critics voiced their displeasure over his choice of attire, questioning his representation of the U.S. amidst the World Cup festivities co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
The match ended in disappointment for Mexico, which lost 3-2 to England. The backlash intensified as conservative commentators expressed disapproval of Kelly’s outfit. One critic, Scott Jennings, remarked sarcastically, “Modern Democratic Party: Post a photo of yourself wearing another country’s jersey.”
Others joined the fray, with Clay Travis suggesting more outrageous options for Kelly’s jersey choice, and Scott Greer quipping about Democrats finding a nation they could admire.
John Lefebvre added that Kelly’s approach seemed disconnected from the joyful spirit of the World Cup, arguing that wearing a U.S. jersey would have been welcomed by Mexican fans, who appreciate mutual respect among nations.
In terms of the match dynamics, England initially took a lead, but after a red card reduced their player count, Mexico built up some momentum. Ultimately, though, England emerged victorious, eliminating Mexico from the tournament.
On a different note, the United States is set to face Belgium in what is anticipated to be a challenging contest, especially following a red card issued to American striker Folarin Balogun in the previous game.
The final match between the U.S. and Belgium will take place at 8 p.m. ET.
