Stocks Rally on Positive Earnings and Oil Price Drop

On Tuesday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average saw a rise, primarily driven by encouraging earnings reports and a decline in oil prices, easing some of the recent issues faced by artificial intelligence-related stocks.

The Dow climbed 504 points, marking a 1% increase, while the S&P 500 rose by 0.4%. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq Composite experienced a smaller uptick of 0.2%.

Shares in 3M, known for its industrial and safety products, surged more than 5% following their better-than-expected earnings and an upgrade in their full-year guidance. Similarly, Northrop Grumman, an aerospace and defense firm, also jumped over 5% after exceeding earnings forecasts.

In terms of oil, prices eased from earlier highs, which seemed to benefit investor mood. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures were down just under 1%, settling around $103 a barrel, while Brent crude futures fell about 1%, trading near $108 a barrel. This movement in oil prices and the reduction in Treasury yields occurred while traders kept a close eye on developments in the Middle East.

Recently, the market has faced pressure with growing concerns about the durability of the AI trade, especially with increasing worries regarding debt and demand. For example, Korean AI company Elice saw its shares plummet over 30% during its market debut. Following the positive overnight performance in U.S. stocks, Asian markets dropped on Tuesday, particularly impacting South Korea.

However, by the end of the session, AI-related stocks seemed to recover somewhat. Companies like Micron Technology, Sandisk, and Advanced Micro Devices all gained approximately 1%. Intel also saw an increase of more than 1%, and Seagate Technology rose over 2%. CoreWeave was another player that noted gains of more than 2%.

On Monday prior, the S&P 500 increased by 0.4% during regular trading hours, while the Nasdaq Composite rose by over 1%. Nvidia climbed 1.4%, and Tesla made a more significant jump of 3.8%. Shares of Alphabet also moved up about 1%. This was a notable recovery from the previous week’s downturn, which had impacted the broader market amidst concerns about excessive borrowing related to AI expansions.

As Jake Behan, head of capital markets at Direxion, pointed out, “For much of this year, the market has been willing to look through higher rates because the growth story, notably that around AI, was strong enough to justify it. Last week, we saw that relationship begin to be tested.”

“In the upcoming weeks, hyperscalers will release their reports, which will set the stage for the next significant stress test for the AI trade,” he added. “Guidance surrounding return on investment, data center expenditure, and 2027 capital expenditures will likely hold more weight than the headline earnings results.”
