Dr. James Dobson, Influential Christian Leader, Dies at 89

Dr. James Dobson, a prominent figure in Christian leadership and founder of the Focus on the Family organization, passed away at the age of 89, as announced by the James Dobson Family Institute (JDFI) on Thursday morning.

Gary Bauer, the senior vice president of public policy at JDFI, recognized Dobson as a trailblazer. “His bold leadership, integrity, and compassion empowered countless families to thrive amid societal changes,” he said. “He was not just a leader but also a counselor—a steady voice of truth during tumultuous times.”

Born in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1936, Dobson dedicated his life to reinforcing marriage and biblical values by advocating for the important role of families in America. In 1977, he established his ministry in Arcadia, California, which eventually grew to become one of the largest evangelical organizations in the world. The move to Colorado Springs occurred in 1991.

Under Dobson’s influence, the Focus on the Family Daily Radio program reached over 4,000 stations across North America and was translated into 27 languages, spreading to more than 160 countries—making it one of the most listened-to faith-based broadcasts globally.

After parting ways with Focus in 2010, Dobson founded the JDFI to keep his mission alive, focusing on personal broadcasting and education. Throughout his career, he authored more than 70 books, such as “New Dare” and “God Makes No Mistakes,” many of which continue to be staples in Christian households today.

His impact transcended media; he provided counsel to multiple U.S. presidents, including Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Donald Trump. He was a member of President Trump’s Evangelical Advisory Committee, aimed at addressing key issues for evangelicals.

In his personal life, he is survived by his 64-year-old wife, Shirley, their children Danae and Ryan, daughter-in-law Laura, and two grandchildren.
