Dr. Nirav Shah Launches U.S. Senate Campaign in Maine

Dr. Nirav Shah, the former director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, has officially kicked off his campaign for the U.S. Senate. He will be on the November ballot as the Democratic candidate, aiming to fill the seat currently held by Graham Platner, while challenging Republican Senator Susan Collins.

This announcement follows a tumultuous week in Maine politics. Just a day earlier, Platner suspended his campaign amid serious allegations of sexual assault and physical misconduct from multiple women.

According to Maine law, state Democrats have until July 27 to select a successor. This move is significant as they seek to formally replace Senator Collins, who is campaigning for her sixth term in Washington.

Shah’s entrance into the race comes after he finished first in the initial round of the Democratic gubernatorial primary but lost in the runoff to Hannah Pingree. He mentions a campaign theme of “Breaking the Susan Collins Town Hall Tour.”

With an existing statewide campaign infrastructure, Shah aims to unite the progressive supporters who backed Platner while presenting himself as a familiar face to those who recognized Platner’s leadership during the coronavirus pandemic.

He takes pride in managing one of the swiftest mRNA vaccine rollouts in the nation. The previous Governor, Janet Mills, had emphasized her focus on securing personal protective equipment and ensuring equitable vaccine distribution during her tenure.

However, his political opponents point to a controversial past as the leader of the Illinois Department of Public Health, where he faced scrutiny following a Legionnaires’ disease outbreak at a state veterans’ facility in 2015.

In a statement released Thursday morning, Shah quickly criticized the political establishment and the incumbent Republican senators.

“We must defeat Susan Collins, hold Donald Trump accountable, and fight for a government that benefits everyday Mainers, not just the privileged few. That’s why today I’m proud to announce my run for the United States Senate,” Shah stated. He also remarked that established politicians have let constituents down. “Maine deserves a fighter for this seat, and I will be that fighter.”

Shah argues that this campaign reflects the core Maine values of progress and accountability. He emphasizes the importance of creating opportunities for all and holding powerful individuals accountable.

“This election isn’t just about one person or one seat; it’s about the everyday Mainers. I have shown up and fought for you before, and I am ready to do it again as your next U.S. senator,” he expressed.

As the Maine Democratic Party gets ready for an in-person selection process later this month, Shah is prepared for a competitive internal race, with other prominent Democrats also eyeing the seat before the late July deadline.
