Dr. Mehmet Oz Sworn in as CMS Administrator
Dr. Mehmet Oz, who has recently taken on the role of Administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), shared his views on his new responsibility in a segment with Lara Trump. He mentioned that this position aligns with his long-held desire for change, deeming it “the best job of his life” in Washington, D.C.
Oz emphasized that Medicaid shouldn’t be merely a safety net; instead, it should empower individuals to control their futures. He advocates for the implementation of job requirements and stricter enforcement against disability liability. “Our bottom line is the American people,” he stated, asserting that every decision he makes will influence how enormous funds are allocated to encourage positive actions among citizens.
The Debate on Medicaid Labor Requirements
His perspective comes amidst ongoing discussions on the proposed labor requirements for Medicaid, which have sparked a significant partisan debate on Capitol Hill.
Transitioning from a television host to a politician, Oz views his political journey as a natural progression aimed at achieving meaningful change. Reflecting on his campaign against Senator John Fetterman in Pennsylvania in 2022, he remarked that it enriched his understanding of the intersections between policy and politics. “If you truly want to make a difference, it’s essential to roll up your sleeves, step into the arena, and advocate for what you believe is right,” he said.
Advocating for Medicaid Investment
Since assuming his role at CMS in April 2025, Oz has highlighted the need for Medicaid reform. His agenda includes initiatives focused on modernization and tackling issues of fraud, waste, and abuse. He expressed concern that the program has strayed from its original mission established over six decades ago, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Oz noted, “The abuse occurred because there were mechanisms that allowed extra payments without accountability. It was essentially like legalized money laundering.” He believes that by improving income levels and facilitating job opportunities, individuals can escape the cycle of poverty and regain pride in their achievements.
