Oilers Claim Game 1 in Overtime Against Panthers
The Stanley Cup Finals kicked off on a thrilling note with the Edmonton Oilers taking a dramatic 4-3 victory over the Florida Panthers. Leon Draisaitl sealed the win with an overtime goal, marking his second of the night.
Edmonton found itself down 3-1 at one point but rallied back with three unanswered goals, showcasing determination on home ice. After a tense third period that saw the score tied at 3-3, the game headed into overtime.
One pivotal moment came when Thomas Nose made a costly mistake, sending the puck over the glass in his defensive zone, which resulted in a penalty. Capitalizing on this power play, Connor McDavid set up Draisaitl for a crucial goal.
The scoring frenzy continued as Draisaitl found the net following a deflection from Kasperi Kapanen’s shot. But earlier in the first period, Florida’s Sam Bennett had a controversial goal that had some questioning goalie interference. After a review, it appeared that Bennett had stumbled into Stuart Skinner, leading to the equalizer.
Not long after, Boston’s Brad Marchand, who joined the Panthers during the trade deadline, made a perfect shot to give Florida a brief lead of 2-1. But the momentum then shifted as Bennett scored again, making it 3-1 for the Panthers.
However, the Oilers weren’t ready to back down. They came back strong, with Viktor Arvidsson finding the net, inching them closer to a comeback. Then, Matthias Ekholm scored, making it a tense 3-2 as they entered the third period.
Throughout the night, while the Panthers initially dominated, the Oilers didn’t falter. They turned the tables in the final period, outshooting Florida 46-32, and Skinner made 29 critical saves to secure the win.
