Drake Maye has lost edge with Commanders

The Washington Commanders will make a franchise-changing decision when they take the podium in the 2024 NFL Draft.

And with the overwhelming expectation that the Commanders will draft a quarterback, it’s now a coin toss as to who they select with the No. 2 pick.

North Carolina Tar Heels signal-caller Drake Maye’s advantage over LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels has disappeared, with Caesars Sportsbook rating them both -115 with the No. 2 overall pick in the draft.

The opening odds for this market started at -180 for May and +200 for Daniels at Caesars.

However, Caleb Williams is certain to be No. 1 (~2000, FanDuel), so it’s unlikely that Maye or Daniels will steal the Trojans’ quarterback when the Chicago Bears make their selection. Seems low.

This leaves the remaining two QBs, Daniels and Maye, at the helm for years to come.

Former ESPN analyst Merrill Hoge said: Honest criticism of Maysaid he was more of a project than a first-round quarterback.

“He’s very inconsistent. His handling is inconsistent. He’s not that athletic, I think he’s more stiff,” Hoge said. “He has a longer throwing motion that allows for more picks.”

That doesn’t necessarily mean coaches have the same thoughts Hoge has about Maye, who some have compared to Chargers star Justin Herbert.

The debate will rage on for another seven weeks as managers focus on the rising star of a franchise that has been starved of talent for much of the millennium.

Washington’s 158-227-2 record since 2000 is the fifth-worst of all NFL teams, behind the Browns, Lions, Jaguars and Raiders.

Perhaps the most recent star quarterback acquisition was Robert Griffin III, but the hope is that either Maye or Daniels can buck that trend.
