Drake suffers huge loss after betting on Oilers, Mavericks to win championships

Canadian rapper and avid sports fan Drake has been on a losing streak lately.

He bet $500,000 on the Edmonton Oilers to win their sixth Stanley Cup.

The Oilers stormed back to tie the series at 3-3, but the Florida Panthers held off Edmonton to win Game 7 on Monday. Had the Oilers won, Drake would have received $1.25 million.

The 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs remain the only NHL team to ever overcome a 3-0 series deficit in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Earlier this month, the Dallas Mavericks also shelled out big bucks to the musician: Drake, whose full name is Aubrey Drake Graham, bet $500,000 on the Mavericks winning the NBA Finals.

But the Boston Celtics needed just five games to beat Dallas to win their NBA-record 18th championship. If the Mavs had won the series in four games, Drake would have earned a massive $1.375 million.

The two sports betting fiascos are the latest examples of what has long been jokingly referred to as the “Drake Curse.” The idea that Drake is a bad luck talisman originated from teams and individual athletes who lost after he publicly endorsed them or bet on them to win.

Drake is apparently aware of the perception that he supports sports teams.

“Do you want me to talk about the curse or are you guys OK?” he joked to reporters after his hometown Toronto Raptors won the NBA title in 2019.
