Draymond Green suggests NBA fines harm players’ ability to accumulate retirement wealth: ‘Not set up for us’

Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green is one of the most outspoken players in the NBA.

He was a key member of the Warriors’ dynasty, but he also has been embroiled in multiple on-court disputes with referees and other players.

Many of those incidents have resulted in suspensions and fines, with the 34-year-old having been fined roughly $900,000 during his NBA career, according to Spotrac data.

The four-time NBA champion also lost millions in salary due to multiple unpaid suspensions.

While the money Green has lost from fines and suspensions represents a tiny fraction of his career earnings, he recently argued that such penalties could hurt an NBA player’s ability to amass enough assets for retirement.

“The fines don’t make sense,” Green said on Shaquille O’Neal’s “The Big Podcast with Shaq.”

“It’s like we get fined because most people come from situations that they can’t get out of and they’ve worked hard and accumulated wealth, and it’s not set up in a way that actually allows them to be wealthy when they’re done playing,” Green said.

“In this job, there’s no set way of paying taxes or paying fines. … If I do something wrong, I lose $100,000. It took my mom four years to make $100,000 when I was a kid. And why am I going to lose it overnight? The umpire got mad at me. The umpire didn’t like something I said. So I lose $5,000? Like, on a technicality?”

Green signed a four-year contract extension with the Warriors in late June. He was named the NBA Defensive Player of the Year in 2017.
