A driver had a close call on Thursday following a serious crash when an unsecured metal pipe from a nearby pickup truck smashed into the back of his sedan on a highway in Southern California.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) for the Santa Ana District reported that the incident took place on a highway in Orange County, involving a white pickup truck carrying a load of metal pipes and a gray sedan.
“Our investigation confirmed that the white pickup truck, which was loaded with metal pipes, collided with a gray sedan,” a spokesperson for CHP Santa Ana stated.
After the initial collision, an unsecured pipe was propelled forward and pierced through the rear window of the sedan, narrowly missing the driver.
Photos shared by the CHP depicted the gray sedan with multiple long metal pipes lodged in its shattered rear windshield. Remarkably, the driver managed to escape with only minor injuries, as officials noted.
CHP took this opportunity to remind drivers about the threats posed by unsecured cargo. They pointed out that road debris leads to numerous fatalities every year nationwide.
“Unsecured cargo is responsible for crashes annually, resulting in hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries across the nation,” the agency emphasized. “If cargo is not secured properly, everyone on the road is at risk.”
The agency encouraged drivers to ensure that all items are secured before heading out, recommending the use of ropes, nets, bungee cords, and straps to prevent cargo from falling. They also advised against overloading vehicles and suggested employing heavy-duty tarpaulins and covers for extra protection.
According to data from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, road debris was linked to about 53,000 crashes each year from 2018 to 2023, leading to an average of 5,500 injuries and approximately 72 fatalities annually.
