Driver involved in deadly Anthony Joshua car accident may face charges

Driver Released After Fatal Crash Involving Anthony Joshua

The driver involved in a tragic accident that hospitalized British heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua and resulted in the deaths of two of his trainers has been discharged from the hospital. However, he may soon face criminal charges related to the incident.

Matchroom Boxing confirmed that Sheena Gami and Kevin ‘Latif’ Ayodele, who were both close friends and teammates of Joshua, lost their lives in the crash.

The driver had been hired for a trip with Joshua’s team to Nigeria, where Joshua’s parents are from. Reports indicate that he might be charged with reckless driving due to the events of the accident on Monday.

The Federal Road Safety Corps of Nigeria reported that the driver lost control of the vehicle while speeding and attempting to overtake another vehicle on the crowded Lagos-Ibadan Expressway—described as a significant traffic violation.

Ogun State Police Commissioner Lanre Ogunlowo mentioned to a media outlet that a tire burst contributed to the car spinning out of control, although more details were not specified in the agency’s statement.

Joshua, who is 36, had only minor injuries as he sat behind the driver. Tragically, Gami and Ayodele were seated in the passenger area and suffered fatal injuries when the right side of the vehicle was severely affected by the impact.

This heart-wrenching crash occurred just ten days after Joshua won a high-profile bout against YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul, an event that garnered significant attention and resulted in Joshua earning approximately $92 million.

Following the news of the accident, Paul expressed his condolences on social media, emphasizing, “Life is more important than boxing,” and shared prayers for those affected by the unfortunate incident.

As of now, Joshua has not publicly commented on the tragic events surrounding the crash.
