An impaired driver recently endured a 600-foot drop after veering off a winding highway in Northern California but is now facing legal repercussions, according to officials.
Early last week, a truck traveling along Highway 263 in Siskiyou County went off course, hurtling down a steep cliff in a potentially life-threatening incident, police reported.
The white pickup truck, mangled and burned, split in two, yet the driver—who has yet to be named—managed to survive the crash.
“It’s quite remarkable that this individual survived what could have been a fatal accident,” commented the California Highway Patrol.
Following the incident, the driver was taken into custody for drunk driving.
Images shared online by the CHP depict evidence of the wreck; tire marks scattered on the right shoulder of the bendy highway suggest the driver lost control, overcorrected, and then skidded off to the left.
The truck reportedly struck a cliff resembling a 60-story building, losing its rear section as it careened down the steep slope, ultimately landing in a ditch at the base.
The driver’s cab ignited in flames amid the woods, leaving only the charred remnants of the truck’s front. The CHP has not disclosed whether the driver sustained injuries.
Authorities expressed that the man’s survival is nothing short of miraculous.
“This incident serves as a serious reminder that driving under the influence not only endangers your own life but also the lives of others,” stated the CHP. “Opting to drink and drive can lead to truly preventable tragedies.”
On social media, many commenters praised the apparent luck of the suspected drunk driver, suggesting some sort of divine intervention.
“Not only was there someone looking out for me, but perhaps the good Lord wrapped me in bubble wrap on that flight,” joked one commenter.
This unfortunate accident in Siskiyou County occurred mere weeks after another incident in Santa Barbara County, where a suspected drunk driver took the lives of five teenagers and left another seriously injured.
The tragic Santa Maria Valley crash has led local authorities to issue warnings about the dangers of alcoholism, labeling it a common issue in the area.
