A driver, reportedly under the influence of alcohol and marijuana, was discovered passed out in a Tesla that had been navigating a city street on autopilot.
Officers from the Vacaville Police Department found the man dozing in the driver’s seat on a Wednesday morning around 11 a.m., with pizza boxes and small wine bottles scattered beside him.
A concerned citizen alerted authorities to the moving Tesla, prompting officers to investigate, leading to the man’s arrest for suspected drunk driving.
In the beginning, authorities were unsure if he was facing a medical issue or, well, something else. It wasn’t until they assessed the situation that they realized he was intoxicated.
“While California drivers can utilize new driver-assistance features, it’s crucial they remain aware and sober,” noted a police statement.
Authorities expressed gratitude to the community members who reported the situation, emphasizing that such vigilance helps keep the streets safe.
Social media users had a field day with the incident, humorously noting that the car seemed to possess better awareness than the driver at that moment. Many also praised the police for their quick response.
