Drug overdose fatalities fell by 20% in 2025 due to tougher border enforcement

Last year, drug overdose deaths in the United States dropped by more than 20%, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This decline occurred during a period marked by President Donald Trump’s strict border enforcement measures.

Joseph Giacalone, a former NYPD sergeant and criminal justice professor, suggested that the decline might be linked to the anticipated shift in approach to crime with a tough-on-crime president. He pointed out that during Trump’s first term, overdose deaths were generally increasing but plateaued before spiking dramatically when President Joe Biden took office.

Interestingly, the CDC did not specify reasons for the decrease but noted it aligns with tighter border controls. Giacalone stated that enhanced border security likely played a significant role, stating that drug traffickers face fewer opportunities to transport drugs into the country.

While it’s possible that factors like the broader availability of overdose reversal drugs, such as Narcan, had some effect, Giacalone emphasized that securing the border seems to be one of the most impactful measures. He also mentioned that while the effectiveness of, say, bombing drug smuggling ships is still debated, deterrence in criminal justice remains crucial.

Data remains preliminary, as some death investigations are still ongoing, but the trends show certain states – including Louisiana, Florida, Virginia, New York, Vermont, Wyoming, and D.C. – experiencing declines of over 30%. In contrast, a few states like North Dakota experienced no decline, with Kansas and Hawaii seeing a minor increase in overdose deaths.

Notably, Arizona is experiencing a troubling increase, with a 17.75% rise in fatal overdoses reported between 2024 and 2025. This uptick is particularly alarming given the public health crisis in Maricopa County, where fentanyl-related deaths have been alarmingly high, leading local authorities to heighten their crackdown on fentanyl dealers.
