Drug 'zombies' in Philadelphia area near World Cup stadium

As the excitement builds for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with thousands of soccer fans heading to Philadelphia’s stadium, the city has a chance to shine on a global stage. However, just a short drive away lies a stark contrast—the struggling streets of Kensington, plagued by drug issues.

While visitors can enjoy iconic attractions like the Liberty Bell, the American Revolutionary War Museum, and the renowned Philadelphia Cheesesteak, they may also encounter a serious problem: the visible drug markets in Kensington, where addiction has left a deep mark on the community for years.

This area has become notorious for its visible drug use, with many individuals found incapacitated, often bare-footed and lying on the dirty ground.

On the streets, it’s common to see people injecting substances into their hands, arms, and necks.

This ongoing drug crisis has led to visible injuries among users, who often sit in a daze, waiting for their next fix.

For quite some time, the presence of xylazine—a sedative typically used for animals—has seriously affected this region, especially when it’s mixed with fentanyl, a dangerous combination.

Health advocates and law enforcement are alarmed by the risks associated with this mixture, which can lead to long-lasting sedation and a heightened risk of overdose.

Recently, public health officials have raised concerns about another sedative, medetomidine, which is starting to surface in the local drug supply.

This substance might be even more potent than xylazine, posing additional challenges for treatment and overdose responses.

As the World Cup draws near, visitors will certainly appreciate Philadelphia’s rich history and vibrant neighborhoods, along with its passionate sports culture.

Yet, the tournament could also spotlight the distressing human impact of addiction in the area.

The games will be held at Lincoln Financial Field, the home of the Eagles, featuring five group stage matches leading up to the July 4 round of 16 match.

On June 14th, Ivory Coast faces Ecuador, followed by Brazil’s matchup with Haiti on June 19th.

France will compete against Iraq on June 22nd, Curaçao plays Ivory Coast on June 25th, and Croatia goes up against Ghana on June 27th.
