Drugged-up murderer who danced over new father's body finds out his sentence after judge rejects his justifications

Sentence for Miami Beach Shooter

A man who shot and killed a protective father in front of his family has been sentenced to 50 years behind bars. The shooter, Tamarius Davis, attempted to excuse his actions by claiming that drugs led him to believe he was living in a video game.

Davis, now 27, showed little emotion during his court appearance as he faced sentencing for the murder of 21-year-old Dustin Wakefield. The tragic incident occurred in August 2021 at La Cerveceria restaurant in Miami Beach, where Wakefield was trying to shield his wife, Karina Olguin, and their one-year-old son, Elijah, when Davis opened fire.

Witnesses reported that after the shooting, Davis was seen dancing around Wakefield’s body. On vacation from Georgia at the time, Davis later pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, having initially told police that he had chosen his victim at random while under the influence of psychedelic mushrooms.

During the sentencing hearing, Davis’ attorney, Juan Mourin, argued that his client suffered a psychotic episode, which distorted his perception of reality and led him to believe he was in a video game. However, Judge Laura Stuzin dismissed this explanation, stating, “This was not a mistake or just a bad episode. This was preventable.” She noted that Davis had the opportunity to seek help for whatever issues he was facing.

Prosecutor Casey Hughes emphasized that the drugs simply revealed “the bitter roots in his heart.” She strongly asserted that sentencing Davis to anything less than life in prison would mean allowing evil to triumph over good.

Wakefield’s widow shared the profound impact of the tragedy on their family, expressing sorrow over her son asking questions about the father he will never truly know. “What happened that day didn’t just take my husband from me, it took away my sense of safety,” she explained. Grocery stores and restaurants now feel like places of anxiety to her, as she feels the need to always plot possible escape routes.

Additionally, Wakefield’s sister reflected on the abrupt loss of her brother, lamenting how his life, and the future they had envisioned, was abruptly shattered. It’s heartbreaking that Davis’ actions also injured another patron, although their injuries were not life-threatening.
