The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) faced criticism from conservatives following a recent interview where co-chair Megan Romer endorsed several radical proposals, such as abolishing the Senate, prisons, and borders. During her discussion on Fox News with Shannon Bream, Romer confirmed that DSA’s platform indeed calls for dismantling significant U.S. institutions.
When Bream pressed her about the Senate, Romer affirmed the group’s stance, stating they support replacing the presidency and the Supreme Court, abolishing ICE, and granting amnesty to undocumented migrants, among other bold initiatives. She mentioned that abolishing borders and prisons is part of their long-term vision.
Senator Ted Cruz reacted sharply, labeling the ideas as “crazy.” Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed alarm, emphasizing that these proposals represent a significant shift away from traditional values and are indicative of a growing communist influence.
Actress Patricia Heaton seemed to echo Johnson’s sentiment with a simple, enthusiastic “Yay.” Meanwhile, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise noted that the DSA is gaining traction beyond just liberal strongholds, with candidates inspired by Bernie Sanders winning races across the nation, hinting that these ideas might soon spread to other communities.
Congressman Burgess Owens remarked on the honesty of today’s Marxists regarding their views, suggesting that ignorance of their proposals could be dangerous. In Wisconsin, gubernatorial candidate Tom Tiffany criticized Democratic candidate Francesca Hong for sharing similar leftist views, touching on issues like police and prison abolition.
When approached for comments, a spokesperson for Hong denied Tiffany’s characterizations, stating that, while she has previously discussed ambitious reform goals, such as addressing policing and prison issues, she does not currently advocate for abolishing the Senate or replacing the presidency. She maintains that her positions do not align with the DSA on every point.
The Virginia Republican Party called on all Democrats to clarify their stance on DSA policies, labeling them as anti-American. Representative Chuck Fleischmann warned that the DSA’s movement threatens core American values and must be opposed to prevent what he views as a fundamental shift in the country.
Additionally, Senator John Fetterman criticized the DSA’s ideals, questioning the apparent support for such radical views within the Democratic Party. Commenting on social media, investor Bill Ackman echoed these concerns about a potential anarchistic shift among some Democratic candidates.
As socialist movements continue to make headlines, especially in New York, recent elections have seen candidates backed by progressive figures defeating more established candidates, indicating that these ideas are gaining ground more broadly.
