Democratic Socialists Claim Role in NYC Mayoral Candidate’s Trans Rights Platform
Members of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) recently shared their involvement in developing Zohran Mamdani’s progressive trans rights agenda.
While at the “Socialism 2025” conference in Chicago last month, DSA members highlighted their close ties to major mayoral candidates and their teams. Video footage from the event captures their discussions.
“The Zohran campaign has always wanted to collaborate with us, and we were totally on board,” said Daniel Goulden, a member of the NYC DSA steering committee, emphasizing their connection with a hand gesture at the conference.
“We developed the platform alongside him. The team was really pleased to work with us, and now he’s on the path to becoming mayor,” Goulden chuckled.
He also praised the city’s plans for funding trans healthcare, suggesting it would extend beyond just New York City, stating it’s for “everyone.”
“Zoran is literally trying to do what conservatives claim we aim to do,” he noted.
Goulden elaborated, “We collaborated with the Zohran Mamdani campaign on the trans rights platform. Our goal was to harness the influence of New York City to support gender freedom nationwide, not just for its residents.”
Yet, he seemed to underestimate the potential costs involved.
“New York City could provide trans healthcare for all trans individuals across the country without it being a significant burden on our resources,” he asserted.
Mamdani’s campaign platform, accessible online, includes various far-left initiatives related to transgender rights, some of which were highlighted during the conference.
For instance, the Mamdani campaign vows to establish New York City as a “sanctuary city for LGBTQIA+ individuals and their families.”
Stuart Smith, a research analyst at the Manhattan Institute, shared clips from the DSA’s conference on social media, where Mamdani remarked that the taxpayer money proposed for trans surgeries might “not last long” due to the costs.
The campaign also specified that it would not provide trans surgeries to minors and targeted NYU Langone for its stance against such measures, deeming it harmful.
It even issued warnings to hospitals that did not align with their views, threatening to “hold them accountable” for not complying.
The campaign’s document stated, “The Mamdani administration will work with the NYS Attorney General and District Attorney to investigate hospitals that refuse to provide legitimate medical care for trans youth.”
In New York, public opinion on trans issues appears divided. A proposal that amended the state constitution to include sexual orientation and gender expressions received about 62.5% approval, compared to 37.5% opposition.
Additionally, support for a Trump executive order defining gender as only male or female was backed by 47% of Empire State voters, with 40% opposed, according to a Siena College poll from February.
On the topic of trans athletes, a poll from last year revealed that 66% of New York voters believed high school athletes should only compete in categories corresponding to their sex assigned at birth.
In another statement, Goulden claimed close involvement with Mamdani’s campaign, stating, “DSA holds regular meetings with him and his team. His policy director is a good friend of mine, and I’ve collaborated with his campaign manager for over a year.”
However, a spokesperson for Mamdani refuted Goulden’s claims, stating that he is not involved with the campaign, but did not address questions about DSA’s role in crafting the platform.
The campaign indicated it has drawn inspiration from progressive policies in places like San Francisco and Olympia, Washington, with plans to allocate $87 million for LGBTQ services in New York.
- $30 million for housing programs
- $20 million for mental health services
- $10 million for organizations serving transgender individuals
- $10 million for administrative costs
- $5 million for labor initiatives
- $5 million for new education funding
- $4.7 million for medical resources
- $2 million for public defense and legal system enhancements
“As mayor, Zohran will combat Trump’s federal discrimination and funding cuts that threaten protections for trans New Yorkers and LGBTQ+ rights,” a campaign spokesperson asserted.
The DSA has yet to respond to requests for comment regarding these developments.
