Support for Mayor Mamdani’s Tenant Advocate Amid Controversy

Supporters of Mayor Zoran Mamdani have rallied around Shea Weaver, the new director of the Mayor’s Office for Tenant Protection, as she faces criticism for her past remarks targeting the real estate sector. Some allies, including members of the Democratic Socialists of America, argue that New York City is fortunate to have her.

Weaver has been at the center of a heated debate following social media posts where she referred to homeownership as a “weapon of white supremacy.” In response, the city’s DSA branch expressed that the real estate industry is concerned about organized tenants and workers gaining power.

“This does not deter us. We repelled the attacks of real estate agents in November and will continue to organize and fight for tenants across the city,” a representative stated, seemingly alluding to Mamdani’s recent electoral win.

Criticism of Weaver has been labeled a “desperate right-wing attack” by her far-left supporters. Morris Katz, one of Mamdani’s key advisers, declared on social media that New Yorkers should feel lucky to have her in government, praising her dedication to addressing the housing crisis and protecting tenants.

Weaver, who is 37, was recently appointed but found herself facing backlash over her earlier provocative views on housing. This sparked alerts from the previous administration and calls for her dismissal from the mayor’s office.

Past statements, such as “There is no such thing as a ‘good’ gentrifier,” and comments about homeownership being a racist policy failure, have resurfaced and are generating concern. In one forum, she stated, “Our goal is to make housing actually worthless to some extent.”

Despite some of her statements being regarded as disappointing, Mamdani has consistently supported Weaver, highlighting her past contributions to housing advocacy.

On Thursday, Weaver appeared in good spirits as she left her apartment in Crown Heights, contrasting her previous day when she became emotional while responding to media inquiries.

Numerous state legislators have voiced their support for Weaver, acknowledging her as a “proven tenant advocate.” Senator Gustavo Rivera (D-Bronx) described her as trustworthy and competent for her role, suggesting that major real estate firms are attempting to undermine her credibility.

State Representative Robert Carroll (D-Brooklyn) noted Weaver’s significant role in the 2019 Tenant Protection Act, which bolstered renter rights. He remarked that she has always been a respectful advocate during their interactions.

Additionally, State Representative Farrah Sfrandt-Forrest (D-Bronx) credited Weaver with assisting many individuals in accessing safe and affordable housing.

Weaver studied at Bryn Mawr College and New York University. Records indicate her mother owns a property in Nashville valued at $1.6 million and is affiliated with Vanderbilt University.
