DSA Calls for Continued Resistance to Israeli Occupation
The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), associated with New York mayoral candidate Zoran Mamdani, advocated on Monday for ongoing resistance against what they term Israel’s “apartheid and occupation” in the Gaza Strip. This statement came despite a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
In a declaration titled “Until the Liberation of Palestine,” the DSA expressed skepticism about Israel’s commitment to any negotiated peace that would safeguard the lives and self-determination of the Palestinian people. Notably, they did not acknowledge the situation of Israeli hostages held by Hamas, instead accusing Israel of terrorizing Palestinians and their neighboring countries.
The DSA statement asserted, “This does not end Israel’s attacks on the Palestinian people or the theft and occupation of Palestinian land. A conditional ceasefire agreement does not absolve the ruling class.” They further described the ongoing violence in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem, highlighting concerns about illegal settlements and asserting that Israel is instilling fear throughout the region, including Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Qatar, and Iran.
Mamdani’s Response Draws Criticism
Mamdani’s own comments regarding the ceasefire also echoed similar criticisms of Israel, bringing forth backlash from both his mayoral rival and city officials. He remarked on social media that the recent developments in Gaza brought relief to families as hostages were freed and lamented years of fear and anxiety. “We must work towards a future built on justice, a future free of occupation and apartheid, and a world where all people can live in safety and dignity,” he stated.
New York City Councilmember Inna Vernikov quickly criticized Mamdani’s remarks, describing them as “word salad” and pointing out the absence of any reference to Hamas or its actions. Former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is also running for mayor, highlighted the delay in Mamdani’s commitment to the ceasefire, suggesting that his silence during critical moments spoke volumes.
This exchange was compounded by a controversial post from Mamdani’s wife, Rama Duwaj, who mourned the death of a Palestinian influencer that had supported Hamas following its actions on October 7. The influencer, Saleh al-Jafarawi, was reportedly killed during clashes involving Hamas in Gaza after Israeli forces withdrew.
Duwaj expressed her condolences on Instagram, referring to al-Jafarawi as “Dear Jafarawy.”
