Controversial Social Media Posts Linked to Florida Senate Candidate Angie Nixon

Angie Nixon, the Democratic Socialists of America candidate for the U.S. Senate from Florida, faced scrutiny due to a former paid staff member’s comments praising Hamas and wishing harm on “Zionists.”

Nixon has been known to reference Assata Shakur, a figure with a controversial history, and one of her staffers, Sara Mahmoud, served as her social media manager. Reports indicate that Mahmoud had previously made provocative posts in support of Hamas.

One such post from 2018 stated, “Glory and honor to our freedom fighters. Praying for their safety and success,” coinciding with a period when Hamas launched numerous rockets toward Israel.

In a now-removed post, Mahmoud went as far as to ask, “Can Zionists die already?”

But there’s more. She commented on social media that “Palestine is the land of the Arab Palestinian people,” expressing her allegiance with hashtags related to Hamas.

Mahmoud has made other troubling remarks too, including one expressing a desire for white Jews to “die,” calling them entitled in a mocking tone in 2016. Furthermore, she declared that “Zionism is a form of white nationalism” and criticized those who conflate Zionism with Judaism.

Even though Mahmoud is no longer part of Nixon’s campaign, she was reportedly managing social media as recently as June and received around $8,400 for her work during that time, according to financial disclosures.

This situation aligns with previous comments from Nixon, in which she suggested that the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) should be utilized for political campaigning in Florida. She emphasized the need for creating the right channels to engage the community and foster dialogue.

The timing of Nixon’s remarks is somewhat unclear, but it adds to the complexity of her campaign. Notably, Governor Ron DeSantis had labeled both CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood as foreign terrorist organizations in an executive order last year, calling for action against any unlawful activities associated with them.

Interestingly, Nixon has referred to former President Donald Trump as “basically a communist,” which seems a bit contradictory given her affiliation with the Democratic Socialists of America. However, she has also attempted to minimize her ties to socialist ideas while advocating for several leftwing policies, like dismantling Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), promoting universal healthcare, and implementing accessible childcare and pre-kindergarten programs.
