The city is taking steps to clean up after the Knicks’ victory, quite literally.
The Sanitation Department is celebrating the Knicks’ success in the NBA Finals by giving away five trash cans designed with the team’s colors. At the same time, they’re seeking action against a JPMorgan executive who gained attention for stealing trash cans from the parade route.
In an ad for the giveaway, the department quipped, “No need to scrub the trash can.” They’re offering five special Knicks-themed bins.
Unlike those who made headlines for their odd behavior, like, you know, grabbing a trash can and emptying it on the sidewalk, the contest winners won’t have to deal with that mess.
DSNY Commissioner Gregory Anderson stated, “Activities that deface sidewalks and steal public property should always be prohibited in New York City.”
He added that there’s no need to snatch trash cans from the street. Instead, DSNY is excited to provide these brand-new, heavy-duty bins to lucky Knicks fans. They encourage fans to join them online and continue celebrating the team.
Only five of these bins will be given away through the contest, with winners selected randomly.
Weighing about 30 pounds and standing 28 inches tall, these trash cans are the same as those you see throughout the city, just brand new.
To enter, participants must be at least 18 years old, live in New York, and be able to pick up their prize from the DSNY office in Lower Manhattan.
Applications need to be in by 5pm on July 3rd, and they can be submitted at on.nyc.gov/basketgiveaway.
Winners will be chosen later this summer.
If you miss out, you can still buy a Knicks-themed trash can for $168 from Only NY.
This contest follows a previous incident where a Knicks fan stole a city trash can, was caught, and had to return it, facing a fine of $175 for the act.
Photos of the returned bins were shared by the department, which received them back at their financial district office.
A bizarre twist: the individual involved, Angie Baez, a recently let go JPMorgan Chase executive, was seen dragging a stolen trash can on the subway after she had emptied it on Broadway, as reported by officials.
