Senator Durbin Critiques Trump’s Actions on D.C. Police
Illinois Senator Dick Durbin criticized President Trump’s recent decision to take control of police stations in Washington, D.C., labeling it as “political theatre.” He expressed concern that the president overlooked the city’s strides in crime reduction.
Durbin spoke at a press conference on Monday, where he joined Texas Democrats addressing issues surrounding a new Congressional district that may benefit Republicans in the upcoming midterm elections.
While acknowledging the suffering of violent crime victims in D.C., Illinois, Texas, and elsewhere, Durbin stated, “What the president did this morning was a political theatre.” He emphasized that Trump’s push to federalize D.C. police ignores concrete progress in reducing violence in the city.
Describing Trump’s actions as typical, Durbin suggested they aim to create “chaos” and divert attention from pressing issues, such as the controversies related to Jeffrey Epstein’s files and mounting healthcare and living costs that strain families.
“He’s trying to change the subject. He can’t do that,” Durbin remarked.
On the same day, Trump announced the deployment of National Guard troops to enforce federal oversight of D.C. police and address violent crime. Under the Home Rules Act, the president can assume temporary control of local police for up to 30 days during declared emergencies, though an extension requires Congressional approval.
Trump declared a public safety emergency for the city, suggesting that recent violent crime rates have decreased significantly in D.C., reaching a 30-year low last year, and showing a continued decline compared to the previous year.
Texas Senator Gene Wu, a minority leader in the Texas state legislature, connected Trump’s federalization approach to actions by other Republicans, who have reportedly used state police to target Democrats. He expressed concern about the broader implications of what he sees as a rise in authoritarianism in the U.S.
Wu stated, “This is, ‘I don’t care what your local city wants. We don’t care what your state wants. We’re going to dictate what you do.'” He highlighted Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s directive to arrest Democrats who have left the state as indicative of this trend.
“This is happening all over our country. If we don’t stop it, this is the end,” Wu warned, adding that if authoritarianism continues unchecked, it may become too late to resist.
