Dylan Schiess Makes a Splash in Toronto Debut
Dylan Schiess is making waves in his new role with the Blue Jays. In his debut on Saturday, he struck out 12 batters over 5 1/3 innings, giving up just one earned run. This effort helped lead Toronto to an 8-7 walk-off victory against the Athletics at home.
Schiess’s 12 strikeouts set a record for the most in a Blue Jays debut, beating the previous record held by David Price, who had 11 strikeouts in his own debut in 2015.
The 30-year-old also managed to sit down Athletics catcher Tyler Soderstrom in the third inning, with his impressive strikeout count continuing into the fourth and fifth innings.
“That was awesome,” Schiess said after the game. “The moment I walked out, there was a huge cheer, and the fans were incredibly supportive. It was really cool—such an electric atmosphere. I think that really makes a difference.”
Blue Jays captain John Schneider expressed his admiration for Schiess’s debut, noting that he surpassed colleague Kevin Gausman’s opening-day performance of 11 strikeouts.
“He was one step ahead of Kevin in terms of strikeouts,” Schneider remarked.
Gausman expressed his belief that this season’s pitching staff is the strongest since he joined the Blue Jays in 2022. “I really love this year’s pitching staff. It’s the best we’ve had in terms of depth since I’ve been here,” he mentioned.
Interestingly, despite Schiess’s stellar start, Toronto found themselves trailing in the ninth inning. Catcher Alejandro Kirk managed to hit a game-tying solo home run, pushing the game into extra innings.
Third baseman Ernie Clement emerged as the hero, delivering a game-winning single in the 11th inning, marking a walk-off win for the second consecutive year.
“We’re fighting back, getting our guys through,” Clement commented. “That mentality was key for last year’s team, and it’s just as special this year. We’re never really out of it. We’ll continue to fight.”
