St. John’s Secures Victory Against Connecticut

It was a pivotal moment for St. John’s, and they needed a crucial basket. Naturally, the ball found its way to Dylan Darling.

This backup point guard has a talent for stepping up when it matters most. He showcased this skill recently in comeback victories against Xavier and Seton Hall, and he was at it again on Friday night.

Dahlin nailed a step-back three-pointer with just over three minutes left, pushing the Johnnys’ lead to five points. Then, on the very next possession, Zuby Ejiofor charged towards the basket in the lane. These contributions were essential as No. 22 St. John’s defeated No. 3 Connecticut 81-72 in front of a packed crowd at The Garden.

“His desire to take over the game is impressive,” commented coach Rick Pitino. “He made plays, drove to the rim, snagged some critical steals, and hit a huge three. What he’s doing right now is really remarkable.”

Dahlin recorded all of his nine points in the second half, along with two assists.

Defensively, he played a significant role, helping the Red Storm force 15 turnovers against Connecticut.

“He’s a fantastic point guard. A phenomenal player,” said Connecticut coach Dan Hurley. “When we needed someone to step up, he made a significant impact in that game.”

After a prior game against Xavier, where Darling hit a last-minute three-pointer for the win, Pitino remarked that Darling’s ball seemed “as big as a church bell.”

In addition to his scoring, Dahlin was effective on defense, contributing to his team’s overall success.

Following the game, Pitino reflected, “They keep improving,” encapsulating his thoughts on the team’s progression.

St. John’s had a noticeable advantage at the free-throw line, attempting 31 to Connecticut’s 12.

Hurley made a few pointed remarks about the officiating, though he mostly kept it light.

When asked about the significant disparity in free throws, he jokingly asked one reporter, “Will you pay the fine?”

Pitino’s victory marked his 903rd career win, tying him with Roy Williams for third place on the all-time wins list. He’s set to pursue his 904th win against his son, Richard, and Xavier on Monday.

This win also marked the first time since the 1999-2000 season that St. John’s has triumphed in three consecutive games against Connecticut.
