Charles Spencer, the younger brother of the late Princess Diana, finds himself in a contentious legal battle involving his estranged wife and his new relationship.
Countess Karen Spencer, who was married to the 60-year-old Earl from 2011 to 2024, is facing a lawsuit for $2.6 million from Professor Cathreen German.
Filed in October 2024, the high court case claims that Mrs. Spencer has “misused” private medical information.
German, aged 42, contends that in an effort to quash online rumors, she was compelled to disclose her diagnosis of multiple sclerosis during a prominent interview.
The new girlfriend mentioned that she had concealed her condition from everyone, including the Earl himself.
In her submission, German indicated that sharing her health status was motivated by concerns about losing control over her medical history.
Mrs. Spencer countered these assertions, stating that German’s choice to publicly announce her diagnosis was “inconsistent” with the claims of privacy she was making in her legal complaint.
“To intentionally reveal that she has MS to gain publicity contradicts the very purpose of these legal filings,” her legal team remarked.
On Monday, both women reached an agreement regarding anticipated future legal expenses, which amount to over $2.6 million.
The Earl and German have an 18-year age difference between them.
This situation follows the announcement in June 2024 of Earl Spencer’s divorce from Karen.
Charles and Karen met on a blind date in Los Angeles in 2010 and married the following year in a ceremony held at the ancestral home of the Spencer family, which also serves as Princess Diana’s resting place.
The ex-couple shares one daughter, Charlotte Diana, aged 12.
Charles Spencer is also a father to six other children from previous marriages—four with his first wife, Victoria Lockwood, and two with his second wife, Caroline Freud. In November 2024, Spencer shared that when he and German first met, “we didn’t even think about romance.”
