We are entering the last full week before Christmas. If you're leaving your holiday trip early, you'll want to be prepared for delays on the roads and in the air as a series of storms rolls around. sweeps across the United States.
The FOX Prediction Center said the Upper Midwest could be the only region spared a major impact from the storm this week.
Other cities in the eastern half of the country should prepare for heavy rain and winter weather that could put a brake on holiday travel.
The next work week begins Monday with the development of a cold front extending from the Great Lakes to the southern Plains, moving east and then losing strength as it reaches the Northeast.
However, a winter weather warning is in effect for the Great Lakes, mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions due to the possibility of rain, snow and possibly freezing rain Sunday through Monday.
The FOX Prediction Center said snow is likely in higher elevations in the interior Northeast and mid-Atlantic region, but rain will be expected near busy Interstate 95.
Behind this system, a stronger low pressure system is expected to develop over the Tennessee Valley, dumping several inches of rain on portions of the lower Mississippi, Tennessee, and Ohio rivers through midweek.
The system then moves into the mid-Atlantic region, scattering large amounts of rain along its path. The FOX Prediction Center said Wednesday that as the system slides offshore and intensifies, it even appears that's when the most significant impacts will move into the region.
That could bring cold air back into parts of New England and the Northeast, possibly bringing more snow to areas that have seen heavy snowfall in recent weeks.
After that, questions remain.
The FOX Prediction Center said there are indications that a potentially impactful winter storm could develop and hit the East Coast, but details remain scarce. Computer forecast models show the precipitation will spread across the East Coast on Thursday and Friday, but details will become clearer in the coming days.
