eBay to Cut Approximately 1,000 Jobs
eBay is planning to reduce its workforce by about 1,000 positions, which is roughly 9% of its staff. This marks the online marketplace’s second round of layoffs this year as it aims to refine its operations and concentrate on growth areas.
This decision was detailed in an internal memo from CEO Jamie Iannone, which was obtained by Reuters. The media outlet first reported on this development on Wednesday. An eBay representative also confirmed the layoffs to the agency.
Iannone mentioned in the memo, “Our strategy is working.” He emphasized the need for the company to determine where to allocate its investments and resources to seize upcoming opportunities.
Recent Layoff Background
Employees who will be affected by the layoffs will be informed in the coming days, as stated in the memo. This comes after a previous round of layoffs in February, where eBay cut about 800 jobs, amounting to around 6% of its workforce.
As of the end of 2025, eBay, headquartered in San Jose, California, employed approximately 12,300 people globally, with around 7,200 of them based in the United States, according to its annual filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
The job cuts occur as eBay continues to grow its presence in various sectors, including luxury items, collectibles, and refurbished products.
In July, eBay completed the acquisition of the secondhand fashion marketplace Depop from Etsy for about $1.4 billion, a move intended to enhance its appeal to younger shoppers. At the time, it was noted that this acquisition would strengthen eBay’s position in the fashion sector, which generates over $10 billion in annual gross merchandise volume.
The layoffs will also precede eBay’s third-quarter earnings report, which is expected next week.
