Economists expect Trump to place huge tariffs on Chinese imports: Survey

According to the latest reports, economists expect President-elect Trump to impose tariffs of about 40% on imports from China. Reuters investigation.

In a survey of economists, 45% said they thought the level of tariffs President Trump would impose on Chinese products would be between 31% and 45%. 35% said the level would be between 15% and 30%, and 20% said the level would be between 46% and 60%.

President Trump is a strong supporter of tariffs as a way to strengthen the U.S. economy, but tariffs can lead to higher prices for consumers because trading partners raise their own tariffs on U.S. exports in response to U.S. tariffs. Critics say there is a potential connection.

Although U.S. tariffs are generally intended to protect the production of U.S. goods, they can have the effect of increasing the price of the products subject to the tariff.

President Trump has also proposed various general tariffs of 10% and 20% on all imports to attract investment to the United States and boost domestic industry. In a debate with Vice President Harris in September, President Trump revisited his promise to raise tariffs on imports when discussing economic policy.

“We impose tariffs on other countries,” President Trump said at the time. “I received billions of dollars from China.”

The Reuters survey of 50 economists was conducted between November 13 and 20.
